Meet Ryan Grubler: He Has a Helmet and a Plan
Every mystery needs a fearless hero.
Ryan Grubler is not that hero.
Ryan is afraid of cats, dogs, birds, sharp pencils, untrustworthy chairs, public bathrooms, and several other dangers most people have not yet recognized. This is why he wears a 1976 Boston Red Sox batter’s helmet almost everywhere he goes.
It is not a costume.
It is armor.
Ryan believes life is safer when you have a plan, a backup plan, and possibly a handwritten emergency letter explaining who should inherit your chess sets if you fail to return. Unfortunately, his plans have a habit of becoming more dangerous than the problems they were designed to solve.
On the first day of seventh grade, Ryan arrives at school early, enters through a door he probably should not use, and lands in the principal’s office before the opening bell.
His explanation?
“Pee.”
It is not his finest strategic move.
Ryan may panic when strange things happen, but he is also curious, loyal, clever, and far braver than he realizes. While other people run away from mysteries, Ryan runs away briefly, reconsiders, adjusts his helmet, and returns with seventeen questions.
He views the world like a chessboard. Every person is a piece. Every danger has a pattern. Every locked door must lead somewhere.
And when impossible things begin happening around Breckenridge Middle School, Ryan is determined to solve the puzzle.
Preferably without removing his helmet.
