Breckenridge Mysteries
Kevin Winchester
Age: 12
Role: Reluctant Hero, Mystery Solver, Protector of His Family
Kevin Winchester never wanted to be the hero of a mystery.
After moving to the seemingly quiet town of Breckenridge with his mother and younger sister, Kevin just wants one thing: a normal life. Still grieving the loss of his father and dreading the challenges of a new school, he begins to notice strange things that nobody else seems to see. A dead watch that suddenly beeps. Missing photographs. Unexplained footprints. Faces lurking in reflections. A centuries-old symbol carved into the walls of his new home.
Practical, intelligent, and endlessly skeptical, Kevin is the kind of kid who searches for logical explanations—even when logic starts running out. His sharp mind and determination make him a natural investigator, but his greatest strength isn’t his curiosity. It’s his loyalty. Whether protecting his little sister Abigail, standing by his friends, or confronting forces far older and darker than he understands, Kevin refuses to abandon the people he loves.
As the mysteries surrounding Breckenridge deepen, Kevin finds himself at the center of events that may have begun long before he was born. Drawn into a web of forgotten history, vanished witches, haunted locations, and secrets tied directly to his family’s new home, he must decide whether courage means having no fear—or moving forward despite it.
Readers will connect with Kevin’s blend of vulnerability, wit, and determination. He’s not the strongest kid in town, the most popular student, or the bravest person in every room. He’s simply someone who keeps going when everything tells him to run.
And in Breckenridge, that may be exactly what the town has been waiting for.
“Don’t panic. Just pretend it makes sense.” That simple philosophy helps Kevin survive his first strange morning in Breckenridge—but as the mysteries grow darker, he learns that some secrets refuse to make sense at all.
For readers who love relatable heroes, supernatural mysteries, haunted houses, and coming-of-age adventures, Kevin Winchester is a protagonist you’ll want to follow long after the final page.
Kimmy Whitmore
Age: 12
Role: Investigator, Truth-Seeker, The Mind of the Group
Kimmy Whitmore has always been more comfortable observing the world than participating in it.
Quiet, intelligent, and fiercely independent, Kimmy prefers the company of books, notebooks, and facts over crowded lunch tables and small talk. Armed with her grandfather’s old reporter’s case and a habit of recording everything she notices, she has spent years believing every mystery has a logical explanation—if you’re willing to look closely enough.
But Breckenridge is not interested in being logical.
When strange reflections begin appearing in school windows, symbols emerge across town, and stories once dismissed as local legends start becoming reality, Kimmy finds herself pulled into the investigation of her life. Unlike most people, she refuses to look away. While others see rumors and ghost stories, Kimmy sees patterns, evidence, and unanswered questions that demand answers.
Sharp-minded and relentlessly curious, Kimmy becomes the group’s unofficial detective. She deciphers clues, tracks inconsistencies, preserves evidence, and asks the questions nobody else thinks to ask. Yet beneath her confidence lies a girl who has spent much of her life feeling invisible and alone. The mystery forces her to do something far more difficult than facing supernatural dangers—it forces her to trust other people.
As she grows closer to Kevin, Ryan, and Scoot, Kimmy discovers that friendship can be just as important as facts. Her careful notes and logical thinking become essential weapons against the secrets buried beneath Breckenridge, but her greatest discovery may be that she no longer has to solve everything by herself.
What makes Kimmy unforgettable is her balance of intelligence and heart. She doesn’t charge headfirst into danger, nor does she accept easy answers. She investigates. She listens. She notices the details everyone else misses. And when the truth becomes terrifying, she keeps searching anyway.
For readers who love clever detectives, courageous outsiders, and characters who prove that knowledge can be every bit as powerful as bravery, Kimmy Whitmore is impossible not to root for.
She carries a reporter’s notebook, trusts facts above rumors, and believes every mystery leaves clues behind. In Breckenridge, those clues may be the only thing standing between her friends and the darkness waiting beneath the town.
Smart, determined, and wonderfully human, Kimmy is the kind of character readers will want beside them when the mysteries deepen and the answers become dangerous.
Ryan Grubler
Age: 12
Role: Strategist, Loyal Friend, Unexpected Hero
Ryan Grubler is the kind of kid who walks through life expecting something to go wrong.
That’s why he wears a Red Sox batting helmet to school.
To most people, Ryan seems eccentric, overly cautious, and constantly worried about things that probably won’t happen. He creates elaborate plans for every situation, prepares for disasters nobody else sees coming, and often assumes he’s one bad decision away from catastrophe. Yet beneath the anxious humor and endless contingency plans is one of the most loyal, courageous people in Breckenridge.
When strange events begin unfolding around town, Ryan quickly discovers that his instincts may have been warning him about something real all along. From mysterious voices and impossible clues to haunted hallways and hidden passages beneath the school, he repeatedly finds himself facing dangers that would send most people running. The surprising part isn’t that Ryan is afraid.
It’s that he keeps going anyway.
Ryan approaches every mystery like a chess game. He studies the board, considers every possibility, and constantly thinks several moves ahead. While others react emotionally, Ryan looks for patterns, strategies, and ways to protect the people around him. His mind works differently, often seeing connections others miss, making him an invaluable member of the group’s investigation.
At the center of Ryan’s world is his friendship with Scoot Reynolds. Their bond stretches back years, and Ryan’s devotion to his best friend becomes one of the emotional anchors of the story. Though Ryan often sees himself as the nervous one, his willingness to stand beside the people he cares about—even when he’s terrified—reveals a deeper kind of bravery.
As the mysteries of Breckenridge grow darker, Ryan finds himself confronting haunted school corridors, supernatural riddles, ancient symbols, and dangers hidden beneath the town itself. Along the way, he learns that courage isn’t the absence of fear. Sometimes courage is simply taking the next step when every instinct tells you not to.
What makes Ryan so lovable is the combination of humor, intelligence, and heart he brings to every scene. He can turn a terrifying moment into an unexpected joke, create an overly detailed plan for an impossible situation, and then risk everything to help a friend without hesitation. Readers may laugh at his anxieties, but they’ll admire his determination.
“Brave isn’t the same as not scared.”
No character embodies that truth more than Ryan Grubler. In a town filled with secrets, ghosts, witches, and mysteries, Ryan proves that fear isn’t a weakness—it’s what makes courage matter.
For readers who love quirky heroes, unforgettable friendships, clever problem-solvers, and characters whose greatest strength is their loyalty, Ryan Grubler will quickly become a favorite.
Scoot Reynolds
Age: 12
Role: Heart of the Team, Poet, Reluctant Adventurer
Scoot Reynolds has a talent for turning life into words.
While other kids play the role they’re expected to play, Scoot quietly fills notebooks with poems, observations, and thoughts he’d rather keep to himself. To most people, he’s the athletic kid who seems confident enough to handle anything. The truth is far more complicated. Behind the humor and easygoing attitude is someone who constantly feels caught between who others think he is and who he really wants to be.
When strange events begin sweeping through Breckenridge, Scoot finds himself pulled into a mystery alongside Kevin Winchester, Kimmy Whitmore, and his lifelong best friend Ryan Grubler. Unlike the others, Scoot doesn’t approach the unknown with notebooks, theories, or contingency plans. He tries to understand it through stories, poems, and the emotions hidden beneath the surface of what’s happening.
Thoughtful, observant, and more sensitive than he lets on, Scoot often notices the human side of a mystery before anyone else does. He sees loneliness where others see odd behavior. He recognizes fear beneath bravado. Even when faced with bullies, ghosts, witches, and impossible events, he never loses sight of the people at the center of the story.
At the heart of Scoot’s journey is his friendship with Ryan. Their bond has survived years of school, embarrassment, adventures, and misunderstandings, becoming one of the strongest relationships in the series. While Ryan often assumes Scoot is the brave one, Scoot secretly believes the opposite. Together, they discover that real friendship isn’t about always being fearless—it’s about refusing to leave someone behind.
As the mysteries deepen, Scoot is forced to confront truths he’d rather avoid. He doesn’t enjoy being the center of attention. He hates expectations. And despite what everyone assumes, he’s often scared. Yet when danger arrives, he repeatedly chooses loyalty over comfort, stepping forward when his friends need him most.
What makes Scoot memorable is the balance between his humor and his heart. He can make readers laugh with a perfectly timed observation one moment and break their hearts with a simple, honest truth the next. His poetry becomes more than a hobby—it becomes a way of preserving moments, understanding fear, and making sense of mysteries that seem impossible to explain.
If Kevin is the investigator and Ryan is the strategist, Scoot is the soul of the group.
He reminds everyone that mysteries aren’t just about clues and secrets. They’re about people. About friendships. About the promises we make when things get difficult.
For readers who love loyal friends, hidden depth, heartfelt humor, and coming-of-age heroes whose greatest strength is their compassion, Scoot Reynolds will feel like someone they’ve known all their lives.
Because sometimes the strongest person in the room isn’t the one who isn’t afraid—it’s the one who keeps carrying the weight of the world for the people he loves.
Mr. Spencer Ashton
Age: 54
Role: Keeper of Secrets, Historian, Reluctant Guardian
For most of Breckenridge, Mr. Spencer Ashton is simply the history teacher.
The slightly eccentric educator with the old briefcase, the endless stories, and an unusual fascination with local legends.
But some secrets don’t stay buried forever.
For decades, Spencer Ashton has carried the weight of a truth no one else remembers. While generations of students passed through his classroom learning dates and names, Ashton quietly studied the darker history of Breckenridge—the vanished records, the forgotten symbols, and the terrifying mystery surrounding three women who disappeared long before most people were born. He knows more about the town than anyone alive, and for forty years he has been searching for answers he was never supposed to find.
Patient, intelligent, and deeply compassionate, Ashton recognizes almost immediately that Kevin Winchester’s arrival in town is not a coincidence. When strange events begin escalating around the school and the old Winchester house, he becomes one of the few adults willing to believe the children instead of dismissing them. While others see overactive imaginations, Ashton recognizes warning signs from a nightmare he has spent a lifetime trying to understand.
Yet beneath his calm guidance lies a man haunted by loss.
The mystery consuming Breckenridge is not merely an academic interest for him. It is personal. The witches, the symbols, the disappearances, and the old house are tied directly to his own family’s past in ways he has spent decades trying to uncover—and perhaps trying to avoid. Every new discovery forces him to confront painful memories of abandonment, betrayal, and unfinished questions that began when he was a child.
As the danger grows, Ashton becomes more than a teacher. He becomes a mentor, protector, and guide for Kevin, Kimmy, Ryan, and Scoot. He teaches them how to recognize clues hidden in history, understand the significance of ancient symbols, and see that the past is never truly gone. But even he doesn’t possess all the answers, and the deeper they investigate, the more he fears that the mistakes of a previous generation may be repeating themselves.
What makes Mr. Ashton such a compelling character is the tension between knowledge and regret. He is wise enough to understand the danger they face, yet burdened by the realization that he may have unknowingly helped it return. His greatest battle is not against witches or supernatural forces—it’s against the guilt he carries and the secrets he has kept for far too long.
To Kevin and his friends, Mr. Ashton becomes proof that courage doesn’t belong only to the young. Sometimes courage means returning to the place that hurt you most. Sometimes it means facing truths you’ve spent a lifetime avoiding.
“Forget everything you think you know.”
For Spencer Ashton, that lesson has defined an entire lifetime. The history teacher who dedicated his life to studying the past eventually discovers that history is not something safely locked away in books—it is alive, waiting, and determined to be remembered.
For readers who love wise mentors, haunted histories, family secrets, and characters whose greatest struggles come from the choices they’ve carried for decades, Mr. Spencer Ashton is far more than a teacher—he is the keeper of Breckenridge’s most dangerous truths.
Eddie O’Reilly
Age: 13
Role: Bully, Outsider, Wild Card
If you ask most students at Breckenridge Middle School about Eddie O’Reilly, they’ll tell you the same thing:
Stay out of his way.
Loud, intimidating, and seemingly fearless, Eddie has built a reputation on sarcasm, pranks, and knowing exactly how to get under people’s skin. He enjoys being the toughest kid in the room and rarely lets anyone see what he’s really thinking. To Kevin, Ryan, Scoot, and just about everyone else, Eddie initially appears to be nothing more than a troublemaker determined to make life difficult.
But reputations only tell part of the story.
Beneath the swagger and constant need to stay in control is a boy carrying burdens nobody notices. Eddie has learned to hide vulnerability behind attitude and anger, keeping everyone at arm’s length. He acts like he doesn’t care what people think, but the truth is far more complicated. The walls he builds around himself exist for a reason.
When the supernatural mysteries of Breckenridge begin to unfold, Eddie finds himself caught in events he cannot bully, joke, or intimidate into submission. A flock of crows speaks his full name in the voice of his deceased grandmother. Strange clues point toward secrets hidden in his family’s past. And for the first time in his life, Eddie encounters things that genuinely frighten him.
Rather than running from those questions, Eddie starts searching for answers on his own.
His investigation leads him into forgotten woods, abandoned places, old family secrets, and encounters with forces far older and more dangerous than anything he imagined. Along the way, readers begin to see the person beneath the reputation: a stubborn, resourceful kid who refuses to back down once he decides something matters.
What makes Eddie such a compelling character is that he lives in the gray areas. He isn’t a traditional hero, and he certainly isn’t always likable. He makes mistakes. He hurts people. He says the wrong thing more often than the right one. Yet when the truth begins to emerge, it becomes clear that his story is about much more than being the school bully. It’s about discovering who he really is when nobody is watching.
As the mysteries deepen, Eddie becomes one of the story’s biggest question marks. Is he a threat? An ally? A victim? Something else entirely? Even he isn’t sure. What is certain is that he is far more connected to Breckenridge’s secrets than anyone realizes.
“Nobody messes with my name.”
For Eddie O’Reilly, those words begin as a challenge. By the end, they become something deeper—a search for identity, family, and the truth hidden behind the stories everyone else has ignored.
For readers who love complex characters, redemption arcs, hidden depths, and antiheroes who surprise them at every turn, Eddie O’Reilly may become one of the most unforgettable figures in Breckenridge. Because sometimes the person who seems least likely to change is the one carrying the biggest secret of all.
Abigail “Abbie” Winchester
Age: 7
Role: Heart of the Story, Keeper of Hope, The Child Who Sees What Others Miss
Abigail Winchester believes monsters exist.
She also believes they can be outsmarted, befriended, or chased away with enough love, imagination, and a good stuffed cat.
Known to everyone as Abbie, she is the youngest member of the Winchester family and the emotional heart of Breckenridge. While her older brother Kevin worries about fitting in, solving mysteries, and making sense of the strange things happening around them, Abbie approaches the world with wonder, optimism, and a remarkable ability to see beauty where others see fear.
After moving to Breckenridge with her mother and brother, Abbie quickly embraces the adventure of a new town. She loves playgrounds, songs, stories, animals, and spending time with Kevin, whom she considers the best big brother in the world. Even when Kevin is embarrassed by her singing, dancing, and endless enthusiasm, Abbie never doubts his love for her. In her eyes, love isn’t something people say—it’s something they do. It’s holding hands, staying close, and never letting go.
What makes Abbie special is that she experiences the mysteries of Breckenridge differently from everyone else.
Where older children see danger, Abbie often sees possibility. Where adults dismiss strange events, she notices details others overlook. She accepts the impossible more easily than anyone, which sometimes makes her appear innocent—but innocence should never be mistaken for weakness. Abbie possesses a quiet emotional wisdom that often reveals truths the older characters struggle to understand.
Her compassion extends to everyone she meets, whether it’s a lonely cat, a strange librarian, or someone who seems frightening on the surface. Abbie instinctively believes there is goodness hidden inside even the most unusual people. That kindness becomes one of her greatest strengths, but it also places her at the center of dangers she cannot fully understand.
As the secrets of Breckenridge begin surfacing, Abbie becomes increasingly important to forces that have been waiting far longer than she realizes. Mysterious books find their way into her hands. Strange visitors know her name before she introduces herself. Paths appear in the woods, cats seem to guide her, and ancient powers take an unsettling interest in her future. What begins as curiosity slowly becomes something far more significant.
Yet even in the darkest moments, Abbie remains a beacon of hope.
She reminds those around her that courage does not always look like fighting monsters. Sometimes it looks like showing kindness. Sometimes it means believing in people when no one else will. And sometimes it means holding on to love when the world grows frightening.
What readers love most about Abbie is her warmth. She brings light into every scene she enters, balancing the story’s mysteries and dangers with humor, innocence, and genuine heart. Her belief in the people she loves often becomes the thing that keeps them moving forward when fear threatens to overwhelm them.
“Love means not letting go.”
No character embodies that truth more completely than Abigail Winchester. In a town filled with shadows, secrets, and ancient mysteries, Abbie represents the simple but powerful reminder that hope is sometimes the strongest magic of all.
For readers who love unforgettable younger characters, courageous hearts, and the kind of innocence that can change the course of a story, Abigail “Abbie” Winchester will quickly become one of Breckenridge’s most beloved heroes.
Katherine Winchester
Age: Early 40s
Role: Mother, Protector, The Family’s Anchor
Katherine Winchester has spent her life doing what needs to be done.
After the death of her husband, Richard, she became the steady force holding her family together through grief, uncertainty, and change. Moving her children to Breckenridge was supposed to be a fresh start—a chance to rebuild, heal, and create a future after devastating loss. Instead, she finds herself living in a house filled with secrets older than the town itself.
Strong-willed, practical, and fiercely devoted to her children, Katherine approaches life with the determination her mother taught her long ago. Her favorite lesson is simple: life is a tough cookie, and sometimes you just have to keep going. Whether she’s preparing for job interviews, managing a household on her own, or helping her children navigate grief, Katherine refuses to let hardship define her family.
To Kevin, she is a source of stability even when he struggles to talk about what he’s feeling. To Abbie, she is warmth, comfort, and unconditional love. Katherine may not always know the right thing to say, but her children never doubt that she will do everything in her power to protect them.
What makes Katherine such a compelling character is that she is not part of the mystery at first.
While Kevin notices strange symbols, haunted photographs, and impossible events, Katherine searches for practical explanations. The old house creaks because it’s old. The unsettling atmosphere comes from stress and exhaustion. The strange feelings are simply part of adjusting to a new life. Yet even she cannot ignore the growing sense that something is wrong. The mysterious photograph of three girls, the strange symbol carved into the house, and dreams that feel more like warnings than nightmares slowly force her to question everything she believes.
As Breckenridge’s secrets begin closing in around the Winchester family, Katherine emerges as far more than a worried parent. She becomes a central figure in a struggle that reaches back generations. Her courage is tested not through reckless adventures or supernatural powers, but through the terrifying possibility of losing the people she loves most.
Beneath her resilience lies a woman still carrying the memory of her husband. Small moments—a favorite song on the radio, a family meal, a quiet evening at home—remind her of the life they once shared. Those memories fuel her determination to preserve what remains and protect the future her husband can no longer help build.
What readers will love about Katherine is her authenticity. She isn’t a superhero. She’s a mother trying her best in impossible circumstances. Her strength comes from perseverance, loyalty, and the refusal to surrender when life becomes overwhelming. Every difficult choice she makes is rooted in love for her family.
“Life is a tough cookie.”
Katherine Winchester lives by those words every day. In a town haunted by ancient secrets and growing darkness, she remains the steady heart of the Winchester family—a woman whose greatest power is her willingness to keep fighting for the people she loves.
For readers who appreciate strong mothers, emotional depth, family-centered stories, and characters whose courage comes from compassion rather than power, Katherine Winchester is a character who will resonate long after the final chapter ends.
Caroline Ascherdown
Age: Unknown
Role: The Fallen Sister, Mastermind, Tragic Villain
Every town has a ghost story.
In Breckenridge, that story begins with Caroline Ascherdown.
Long believed dead after a mysterious fire, Caroline became a legend decades before the events of the novel began. Yet legends rarely tell the whole truth. Behind the rumors is a woman whose choices transformed her from a gifted member of a powerful family into one of the most dangerous figures in Breckenridge’s history.
Brilliant, determined, and utterly relentless, Caroline believes she is pursuing something greater than ordinary life. Where others see limits, she sees barriers to overcome. Where others fear consequences, she sees necessary sacrifices. Over time, that ambition leads her down a path that separates her from the people who love her most—and eventually from her own humanity.
Yet Caroline is far more than a traditional villain.
Beneath her frightening confidence lies a woman haunted by the choices she made and the family she left behind. Her relationship with Spencer Ashton is one of the story’s deepest tragedies. Although he spent his life searching for answers, Caroline spent decades unable to face the pain of what she had done. Even after all those years, the memory of the child she abandoned continues to affect her.
As ancient forces awaken beneath Breckenridge, Caroline becomes the architect behind many of the dangers threatening Kevin, Abigail, and the town itself. She manipulates events from the shadows, believing that she alone understands what must be done. The deeper the mystery grows, the clearer it becomes that Caroline’s plans are tied not only to power, but to inheritance, destiny, and unfinished promises stretching back generations.
What makes Caroline such a compelling antagonist is that she never sees herself as evil. She believes she is right. She believes the sacrifices are justified. She believes the future she envisions is worth any cost. That conviction makes her both terrifying and heartbreaking.
In the end, Caroline Ascherdown embodies one of Breckenridge’s central themes: the difference between holding onto the past and being consumed by it. Her story is one of ambition, loss, regret, and the devastating consequences of refusing to let go.
For readers who love complex villains, tragic backstories, moral ambiguity, and characters whose greatest enemy is ultimately themselves, Caroline Ascherdown is the haunting heart of Breckenridge’s darkest mystery.
